EDF6324European Perspectives on Music Education(EDU) Not offered in 2002 Dr Ros Smith (Co-ordinator), Dr Greg Hurworth, Dr Jane Southcott 12 points + Second Semester + Clayton + OCDL Synopsis: It focuses on an investigation of principles and practices of music education in selected European countries, focusing on traditions and methodologies that have had international influence. Students will consider the role of music in society and the institutions involved in music education (schools, municipal music schools, etc.) as well as curriculum issues and methodologies in countries such as Germany, Austria and Hungary. A comparative study of the Kodaly, Orff and Dalcroze approaches to music education. An optional visit of approx 2-3 weeks to European countries, including a week of intensive workshops at the Kodaly Inst. in Kecskemet, Hungary or the Orff Inst. in Salzburg, Austria. Assessment: 1) Either participation in European tour of 2-3 weeks and Reflective journal of (2000 words) or Written assignment of (2000 words): 30% + (2) Essay of 4000 words on a topic chosen in consultation with the lecturers.: 70% |
