Methods and practice of teaching media studies A

6 points + 2 hours per week + First semester + Gippsland (OCDL) + Prerequisites: Two full years of study in Media Studies + Mass communications + Popular Culture, Film Theory, or similar field of study at tertiary level

Synopsis: This unit will provide an introduction to teaching and preparation strategies necessary for the secondary teacher of media studies. Students taking this unit will investigate contemporary issues in the media, such as representation, narrative and social values in the media forms of film, television, print media, radio and electronic information systems. Students will draw upon their knowledge of these issues to design and implement lessons suitable for a range of levels in the secondary school.

Assessment: Essay on aspects of Australian Media (1500 words): 30% + Series of short prescribed readings & associated tasks (equivalent 2500 words): 70%
