T Cornall 4 points + 26 lectures, 26 hours of tutorial and laboratory classes + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: ECE3202, MAT3901 + Prohibitions: ECS4345, ECE5413, ECS5364 Synopsis: Land and satellite-based mobile radio services, systems and networks. Mobile cellular telephone, paging, telepoint, and wireless LAN systems. Characteristics of the mobile radio channel; multipath fading, shadowing and Doppler effects. Modulation, coding and diversity to combat these adverse effects. Switching and other protocols in support of mobility. Frequency reuse and channel allocation. Multiaccess methods. Study of cellular mobile radio as the typical mobile service. Future developments in mobile telecommunications and associated new design problems. Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 70% + Laboratory and assignment work: 30% |
