Law and economics

7 points + 3 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton

Synopsis: The subject applies the method of economics to the analysis of the law itself - to the structure of the common law, legal processes, legal institutions and statutory regulation, and to the impact of law on the behaviour of individuals and groups and the functioning of the economy. Topics include the nature of economic reasoning and the economic approach to law; property rights in economics and law; torts; crime; contract; the corporation; regulatory law; the court system, enforcement and remedies; court congestion, cost and fee rules, class actions.

Assessment: In-course assessment: 30% + Examination (3 hours): 70%
