Data communications and computer networks

6 points + Two 1-hour lectures per week and one 3-hour laboratory per fortnight + First semester + Clayton, Malaysia + First and second semester Caulfield + Prerequisite: CSE1303 or CSE1201 or equivalent + Prohibitions: BUS2062, CFR2001, CFR2204, CFR3213, CFR3313, COT2001, COT2004, COT3132, CSC3182, CSE2004, CSE2318, DGS3662, GCO3812, GCO7834, RDT3662

Synopsis: Topics include basic concepts and principles of data transmission, major components of data communication systems, communication software, data link controls, introduction to network architecture, open system interconnection model (OSI) and local area networks.

Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 60% + Assignments: 30% + Practical work: 10%
