Synopsis: Electronic document transfer technologies including FAX and EDI. ASCII, HTML, SGML and Postscript formatting of documents. Compression techniques. Issues related to standards (eg ODA, SGML, Text Encoding Initiative). The impact of format on retrieval and storage. Possible future developments.

Assessment: Examination (2 hours): 60% + Assignment: 20% + Practical work: 20%
