CHM3952Analytical science(SCI)
Dr Peter Junk 6 points + Two 1-hour lectures, one 1-hour tutorial and the equivalent of 3 hours laboratory activity per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: 12 points of level 1 chemistry and normally 12 points of level 2 chemistry, or permission + Prohibitions: permission if completed CHM3031, CHM3042, CHM3051, CHM3062 or CHM3951 Synopsis: Future advances in analytical science will involve the development and exploitation of automation and robotics, networks of instruments, intelligent instruments, on-line sensors and miniaturised systems, advanced remote sensing, and the development of total analysis systems. A large proportion of this unit concentrates on the basis and application of three principal approaches to analysis, viz, electroanalysis, molecular spectroscopy and analytical separations. The remaining quarter of the unit focuses on the use and advantage of automated hybrid forms of these techniques and their applications in a variety of industrial, clinical and environmental situations. Assessment: One 2-hour examination: 60% + Assignments and computer testing: 10% + Laboratory work and laboratory reports: 30% |
