Intermediate Chinese, part 1

6 points + 4 hours per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: VCE Chinese (CSL) or equivalent (students may be required to sit for a placement test to determine Chinese language proficiency) Recognition of characters in chapter 1 - 20 of "A new perspective: context, function and structure in teaching Chinese" assumed + Prohibition: Pass in first language stream of VCE Chinese, CHI2210, CBL2210, CHI2211

Synopsis: Intermediate Chinese completes the overview of the important sentence structures of modern standard Chinese begun in Beginning Chinese. Equal emphasis is placed on the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Speaking classes cover practical, everyday situations, to develop interactive competence at a basic level in a range of situations likely to be encountered in daily life in contemporary China. In addition to regular classroom activities, listening and reading skills will be further developed through the use of audio/visual, Web-based and computer-assisted language learning materials.

Assessment: Weekly homework exercises: 20% + Written examination and written tests: 50% + Aural/oral test and class performance: 30%
