Introductory computing for business applications

(IT)

S E Bedingfield (first semester) and T Lewis (second semester)

6 points + Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week + First and second semester, Clayton + First semester, South Africa + First semester, Malaysia

Synopsis: Introduction to the Internet, World Wide Web and potential business applications. Introduction to basic computing concepts and operating systems, including the Windows graphical user interface. Principles of spreadsheets and relational databases, covering their use for the generation of business plans, reports, financial statements, etc. Both the spreadsheet and database components incorporate an introduction to programming with macros and the database component covers principles of database design. The windows application software used in the subject are Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.

Assessment: Examination (2 hours): 60% + Assignments, tests and class assessments: 40% + Students must pass the examination in order to pass the subject.
