BMS3011Human disease and treatment 1(MED)
Dr R Kitching (Medicine MMC) 6 points + 6 hours per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: BMS2011, BMS2021, BMS2031, BMS2042, BMS2052 and BMS2062 Synopsis: An examination of important aspects of reproductive health, child health and disease; the processes resulting in infectious diseases and the development of malignancies, using in-depth study of conditions and diseases that illustrate these processes. The following aspects will be covered (with varying emphasis): biology of the normal state, clinical features/diagnosis and management (including pharmacological) of the condition, the use of molecular/cell biology and models of disease to elucidate pathogenesis, current and future challenges in defining pathogenesis and improving treatment; epidemiological context of the disease or process and its impact on the individual and society. Assessment: Written examination: 60% + Group seminar: 20% + Scientific Paper Critique: 10% + Scientific Debate: 10% |
