Synopsis: This unit commences with the study of the unification process which resulted in the emergence of a single Egyptian state in c.3000BCE. The ensuing Early Dynastic Period, Old and Middle Kingdoms are dealt with in a study which combines the use of literary material, the principal surviving monuments and objects of material culture. An historical outline of these periods forms the framework within which social, cultural and religious developments are all reviewed.

Assessment: Slide test (500 words): 10% + Tutorial participation and presentation (oral and written): 20% + Essay (2500 words): 45% + Examination (1 hour): 25%
