6 points + First semester + Caulfield + 4 taught studio hours and 8 independent study hours per week Synopsis: This subject introduces students with a background in art and design to skills, processes, materials and equipment necessary to the practice of jeweller or metalsmith. Through a series of projects processes and materials are explored in relation to their appropriate use in the fabrication of crafted objects. Contemporary and historical examples are examined through exhibition, class discussion and written material. A program of lectures and supervised studio practice in the basic materials and processes of the traditional jeweller/metalsmith together with the opportunity to experiment and explore ideas, materials and processes which extend the vocabulary of the jeweller/metalsmith.
