Bachelor of Science (Honours)

Course code: 1776 + Gippsland campus
This course provides a fourth year of advanced study and research training for students who have completed a Bachelor of Science or an equivalent qualification. The BSc(Hons) program is designed to prepare graduates for scientifically oriented careers in private enterprise or government, or for entry to postgraduate candidature (MAppSc, MSc or PhD) for students with sufficiently good results. The course may be completed in one year of full-time study or over two years part-time.
Students in science double degrees must have completed at least 144 points of their studies in that course, including all the double-degree science requirements, before they may apply for entry to honours.
To be eligible for entry into the honours year, students should obtain a distinction grade average (70 per cent) or above in 24 points of studies in relevant units at level three. These 24 points of studies will normally include at least 18 points of units in the field of study in which they wish to complete honours. Students who have obtained an average of 65 to 69 per cent in their relevant level-three units may also be eligible for consideration if they have also obtained an average of at least 65 per cent in their remaining level-three units and their application is supported by the head of school.

Course requirements

Approved candidates will enrol in one of the following two units as appropriate:

Each unit will consist of advanced-level coursework offered as discrete units and a research project completed with supervision by an academic staff member of the School of Applied Sciences. The research project will culminate in the submission of a dissertation and an oral presentation. Students will in many cases undertake part or all their project working in an external approved research environment.
