The Bachelor of Computing is designed to produce graduates who satisfy the computing needs of industry, government and commerce, and who can expect employment in the fields of applications programming, systems programming, systems analysis, project management, database design and management, data communications, and a range of specialised positions. Students develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes in the broad areas of software development, computer technology and information systems. The degree can be completed in three years of full-time study over six semesters, with an average of 16 hours per week class contact. This course is accredited by the Australian Computer Society as meeting the requirements for professional-level membership.

Entry requirements

SAFCERT with matriculation exemption or exemption provided by the Matriculation Board (students using either of the previous methods must meet the entry criteria of 40 points for guaranteed entry), or a minimum GCE A-level score of 18 or a minimum IB score of 25, and have successfully completed the prerequisite unit English Grade 12 equivalent, or relevant post-secondary qualifications, or other qualifications deemed to be equivalent to the above (subject to approval by Monash University).

Course structure

The pass degree consists of both compulsory and elective units, to a total of 144 points. There must be a minimum of 36 points at each year level, and a maximum of 60 points of first-year-level units. In first year, the Bachelor of Computing consists of six compulsory units in the areas of computer technology, computer programming and information systems. In second year, there are five further compulsory units in these areas. In third year, all students complete an industrial project unit over two semesters. In addition to these core compulsory units, students must choose at least three approved information technology electives, plus eight other electives which may be information technology electives or which may be chosen from some other discipline area.
