The masters qualifying programs are designed for students who have a
bachelors degree and wish to proceed to a higher degree program, except for the
new professional masters degrees. Two kinds of programs are offered: masters
qualifying with a research component and masters qualifying by coursework. Both
programs are undertaken in one year of full-time or two years of part-time
study. All students undertake 48 points of coursework units at level four.
Students should note that the masters qualifying by coursework programs are
usually identical in content to a graduate/postgraduate diploma program in the
same discipline, whereas the masters qualifying with a research component
programs are similar to honours degree programs and are intended for students
wishing to proceed to research degrees. See individual disciplinary entries for
details of programs offered.
The masters qualifying programs are, as the name indicates, intended for
students who wish to proceed to further studies at masters (or PhD) level. They
are in themselves not a formal qualification and students can therefore not
graduate. However, students who for some reason are unable to proceed to
further studies may apply to take out a graduate (or postgraduate) diploma and
are then eligible to graduate.
Students undertaking a masters qualifying program (MQual), either with a
research component or by coursework, must obtain at least a credit average (60
C) in order to have satisfactorily completed the program. A weighted average
will be used in the calculation, ie the mark for each unit will be considered
relative to its points. Marks for units for which advanced standing (credit)
has been granted will not be taken into consideration in the calculation.
In some programs, a minimum grade of credit (60 C) may be required for some or
all of the core units. Refer to the individual programs listed under each
discipline.
The minimum entry requirement for the masters qualifying programs is a credit average in the third part of the major sequence or in the final year of a bachelors degree. Some programs may require students to have achieved distinction average grades -- refer to the entry requirements for individual programs. Students intending to apply should contact the relevant school.
