Bachelor of Science (Environmental Management)/Diploma in Natural Resource Management


Course code: 2363 + Berwick/Gippsland campus + HECS fees applicable for university component; fees for TAFE components separately charged + Attendance is compulsory for some laboratory-based units in the university component; attendance is compulsory for TAFE modules which are not available in flexible delivery mode
This double award is offered in conjunction with East Gippsland, Chisholm and Northern Melbourne Institutes of TAFE. The degree component is available by off-campus distributed learning. Most of the TAFE diploma components are available in flexible delivery mode.

General information

This course has been designed to prepare students to work at a professional level in the management and utilisation of resources and the environment, particularly natural resources, with an emphasis on best practice and sustainability. Students are provided with a wide range of analytical, monitoring and management skills. It enables students to undertake concurrently the Bachelor of Science (Resource Management) Degree from Monash University and the Diploma of Natural Resource Management from various Technical and Further Education Institutes including East Gippsland, Chisholm, Peninsula and Northern Melbourne Institutes of TAFE.
This cross-sectorial course, commonly referred to as a double award course, provides students with the opportunity to combine the applied 'hands on', vocational and practical aspects of TAFE, with the more theoretical, discipline-based course available from the university. The double award, if taken full time, is a four-year program.

Course requirements

In this double award, students must undertake 108 points of university studies which must be chosen in a manner that satisfies the structural requirements of the double award. For the BSc(ResMgmt)/DipNatResMgmt, students will be required to complete the following studies:
1. A minimum of 96 points from the Faculty of Science offerings.
2. The completion of the resource management major and supporting units selected from:

plus six points from maths/statistics/physical science units.
* EXEMPTION FROM LEVEL-ONE UNITS MAY BE GRANTED WHERE APPROPRIATE, IF EQUIVALENT UNITS HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED (OR ARE BEING UNDERTAKEN) FROM THE DIPLOMA COMPONENT OF THE COURSE.

4. Students would then choose additional units to meet the minimum requirement of 108 points from university-accredited units.
Information on the TAFE requirements for this double award is available from the relevant Institute of TAFE partner. Where there is equivalent course content between units taken in the TAFE associate diplomas or diploma, students may not take the equivalent unit in the degree.
