Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management


Course code: 2870 + Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Monash Medical School, Alfred Hospital + Full-fee-paying course: $4560 (Australian residents) + Not available to international students + 15-hour block + Attendance is compulsory for most units

Aims

This course is specifically designed for professionals working within the health care sector who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in the management of health services. This certificate provides core competencies in health services management, including leadership, human resource and financial management of health services that can be built upon in the Graduate Diploma in Health Services Management and then the Master of Health Services Management or the Master of Public Health.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have a medical degree, a bachelors degree with honours or graduate diploma, or a three-year bachelors degree with relevant professional experience in health management. The department will individually assess applications from students without a three-year degree but with relevant professional experience.

Special requirements

Access to the internet is required, however, access to personal computing facilities is desirable but not essential.

Attendance

Most units have a 15-hour block of face-to-face teaching in Melbourne during one week of the semester. Units are coordinated to allow students to attend the teaching sessions of two units in the same week. The teaching sessions are interactive and experiential and aim to discuss, clarify and reinforce the course content and assessment requirements. A number of guest lecturers who are recognised experts in the health services management field are involved.

Course structure

The Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management comprises 24 credit points and consists of two core and two elective units taken over a 12-month period of two part-time semesters. It is not offered on a full-time basis.

Assessment

Assessment includes assignment work, examination, individual and group presentations.

Advanced standing for previous study

Advanced standing may be granted for the core units where the student supplies documentary evidence of successfully completing a similar unit at a similar level elsewhere, within the last seven years. Any candidate may, with the approval of the course coordinator and the faculty, be granted credit for up to 50 per cent of their course. All advanced standing applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
