Graduate Diploma in Applied Economics


Course code: 2344 + Gippsland campus + Full-fee-paying course: unit fee $1300; course fee $10,400 (2001 fee) + International student unit fee: $1800; course fee $14,400 (2001 fee) + Attendance optional

Aims

This course has been designed for graduates from non-economics disciplines who wish to gain a formal qualification in applied economic studies. Alternatively, students may hold a degree in commerce or business during which they completed only the equivalent of first-year economics or which is of no more than 10 years standing. The course will target local and international students who are unable to study full-time or who do not have access to a university campus for campus-based part-time study. On completion of this course, students should have:

Entry requirements

Applicants require a pass degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution or, an executive certificate from the Faculty of Business and Economics, with an average grade of credit or above.

Special requirements

PC requirement

Access to an IBM-compatible computer is essential for the use of word processing and other software packages.

Course structure

The Graduate Diploma in Applied Economics will normally be completed during four academic semesters, two units each semester. Students will be required to complete three core units and five electives. The electives are currently existing units taught within the major in economics in the Bachelor of Business or Bachelor of Business and Commerce degree and adapted for accelerated learning level and studied by off-campus distributed learning:

Students may select any combination of elective units, however the following streams are recommended.

Policy stream

Year one
Year two

And two of the following:

Finance stream

Year one
Year two

And two of the following:

The list of elective units may be extended to include existing undergraduate economics units offered at the second and third-year levels on other campuses. Such units would be adapted for accelerated learning by off-campus distributed learning.
Students will also have the opportunity to select up to two elective units from another faculty. Such units will complement the chosen area of specialisation and will also be adapted for accelerated learning by off-campus distributed learning.

Assessment

Assessment is by a combination of assignments and final examination for each unit. Generally, a pass is required in the final examination to pass the unit.

Advanced standing for previous studies

Applicants who have completed graduate-level units at a recognised tertiary institution within the last five years which are similar in content to a unit forming part of the course of study may apply for a credit exemption to a maximum of 50 per cent of the course.
