A
major sequence in statistics is available to students entering their first year
of studies, but it is also possible to commence studies in statistics at
second-year level. There are two main streams for the discipline. Students who
wish to major in statistics should complete all statistics (STA) subjects
offered. Students who wish to have a good grasp of data analysis, but do not
require a more complete knowledge of mathematical statistics, can take a minor
sequence in applied statistics.
Students can also take statistics subjects on an individual basis or as part of
a minor or major sequence in mathematics.
There
is one first-level statistics subject offered for science and other students at
the Clayton campus: STA1010 (Statistical methods for science).
This subject is introductory and does not require that a student has completed
any previous studies in statistics, although it is most suitable for those who
have completed either VCE Mathematical Methods units 3 and 4 or SCI1020 (The
design of science). STA1010 is given in both semesters and can also be taken at
second level (as STA2010) if there is no opportunity to fit it into a student's
first-year program.
It is recommended that students considering completing a major sequence in
statistics should take the mathematics subject MTH1020 (Analysis of change) in
their first year.
The second-level statistics subjects offered for science and other students at the Clayton campus are:
The subject STA2010 is similar
to STA1010 in content, with a small amount of additional material at the end of
the subject, and both subjects are run as one lecture group. STA2022 contains
the theoretical material needed to complete a major sequence in statistics. It
is a second-semester subject, so students who wish to complete STA2022 must
either take STA1010 in first year or STA2010 in first semester of their second
year. STA2032 is an applied statistics subject with STA1010 or STA2010 as a
prerequisite.
For students intending to complete a minor sequence in applied statistics, it
is recommended that they complete STA2010 (if they have not already completed
STA1010) and STA2032 in their second year.
For students intending to complete a major sequence in statistics it is
recommended that they complete STA2010 (if they have not already completed
STA1010) and STA2022 in their second year, and take STA2032 in their third year
(as STA3032). It is also recommended that they take the mathematics subject
MTH2021 (Linear algebra with applications) in either their second or third year.
The third-level statistics subjects offered for science and other students at the Clayton campus are:
A major
sequence in statistics normally includes the three subjects STA3011, STA3032
and STA3042 along with the mathematics subject MTH2021 (Linear algebra with
applications).
STA3011 and STA3042 require STA1010 (or STA2010) and STA2022 as prerequisites.
It is strongly recommended that students should also have completed MTH2021.
STA3032 has STA1010 (or STA2010) as a prerequisite and can be taken if STA2032
was not completed in second year.
STA3022 can be taken at third level, but due to prerequisite requirements this
is not recommended for students who intend to take a major sequence in
statistics, as normally it must be completed before both STA3011 and STA3042.
The honours program in mathematical statistics is available through the subject MAT4000; see the ´Mathematics' discipline entry for further details. Some honours lecture units are taught through the Key Centre for Statistical Science, which is a collaborative arrangement between Monash University, the University of Melbourne, La Trobe University and RMIT.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers graduate programs in mathematical statistics, including a MSc by coursework program. These should be discussed with Dr Aidan Sudbury.
