Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Science

Course code: 1469 Course abbreviation: BCom/BSc The following describes the course structure to be introduced in 2001 For details of the old structure, refer to the 2000 university handbook
The following should be read in conjunction with the degree regulations of the Bachelor of Commerce and the Bachelor of Science. The double-degree course of Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Science requires four-and-a-half years of full-time study, but can be completed in four years by accelerating with an overload of six points in each year. An additional year is required to complete the degree with honours, or the equivalent in part-time study. Students must complete subjects to the value of a minimum of 216 credit points subject to the following conditions.
(a) 108 points must be chosen from subjects offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton) and must include the following.
(i) Completion of the following compulsory subjects:

(ii) Completion of a major in a discipline or field of study of the faculty. This requires students to complete 48 points of study in a single discipline or field of study with at least 12 points at each of second and third-year level. Disciplines are defined by department prefixes and fields of study are those sets of related subjects that may be defined in the catalogue of courses and subjects.
(iii) A maximum of eight first-year-level subjects (48 points). In order to meet this requirement, students are able to undertake the second-year versions of the appropriate number of compulsory subjects.
(b) 84 points must be chosen from the Faculty of Science, and must include:
(i) Completion of the core subjects SCI1020 and SCI2010
(ii) Completion of a major in a science discipline or area of study. A science major is defined as a three-year sequence constituting at least 48 credit points following one of the two patterns:

(iii) Completion of at least one minor in a science area of study, consisting of 12 points at level 1 and at least 12 points at levels 2/3.
Thus at least 72 points in the BSc component of the double degree will consist of major and minor studies.
(c) After 108 points from subjects offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton) and 84 points from the Faculty of Science, the remaining 24 points making up the 216 points required for the double degree may be taken from further science studies, or subjects offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics, or subjects offered by another faculty.
The following subject is excluded from the double degree: MTH1210.
Students must have their program of study approved by the course coordinator or the course coordinator's nominee prior to commencement of the relevant year.
