Making Art History

6 points + 2 hours per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: A second-year sequence in Visual Culture or permission from Head of School

Synopsis: This subject is designed to introduce students to a number of skills and methods necessary for advanced studies in art history and theory, and in particular to provide a useful path towards honours. After preliminary attention to fundamentals such as style, iconography, semiotics and the operation of ideology in visual culture, the course will focus on specific applications including the attribution of paintings, catalogue writing, aspects of work in the gallery and museum field, and extensions into allied areas such as cultural tourism and new technologies. Students will be encouraged to work on topics directly relevant to their current or projected research and interests in the field.

Assessment: Seminar paper (1500 words): 35% + Essay (3000 words): 65%
