75 hours of lectures and self-learning modules, 25 tutorials and 75 hours of practical work Synopsis: Introductory microbiology - historical introduction, classification of microorganisms, microbial structure, function, physiology and growth. Sterilization and Disinfection - methods of sterilization, aseptic manipulation, sterility assurance, disinfectants mechanism of action and use of disinfectants. Contamination control - sources of microbial contamination in industrial environments and products. Control of environments, clean room design and function. Preservation - product spoilage, preservation requirements of various products, choice of preservative, evaluation of preservatives. Assessment: Mid-year examination (June) (1.5 hours): 15% + Self-learning modules: 15% + Practical work: 15% + End-of-year examination (3 hours): 55% |
