Synopsis: Aspects of contemporary film theory. Psychoanalytic and feminist theory and the role of spectatorship in the cinema. Characterisation of the hysterical, the masochistic and the sadistic film text and the nature of cinematic pleasure. The /woman0s film0 with reference to recent feminist writings of Silverman, Doane and Gledhill.

Assessment: Essay (3000 words): 30% + Essay (4500 words): 50% + Seminar paper (1500 words): 20%
