SCY2251Children and society(ART)
Naomi White 6 points + 2 hours per week + First semester + Caulfield + Prerequisite: First-year sequence in Sociology or permission + Prohibitions: SCY3251 Synopsis: This subject examines contemporary understandings of, and relations with children. It also considers how these understandings and relations have changed over time. That is, shifts in public responses to children and variations in how children are treated are explored in relation to changing economic arrangements and prevailing family structures. Literature which examines the connection between power, the state and minority status, as well as theories dealing with the construction of social categories will be used as frameworks for analysing the changing status and notions of children and childhood. Assessment: Seminar presentation and written summary (1500 words): 35% + Research project (3000 words): 65% |
