SCM3022Tropical terrestrial biology(SCI) Offered subject to final approval Dr Cathy Yule 6 points + Second Semester + Malaysia + Two 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour practical or equivalent per week + Prerequisites: BIO1011, BIO1022, BIO2011 Synopsis: This subject focuses on the biology of terrestrial tropical ecosystems in South East Asia (particularly the Malaysian region) but also looks at tropical environments in other parts of the world. The Malaysian region encompasses many unique tropical habitats such as dipterocarp forest, peatswamp, cloud forest, karst vegetation and caves which will be studied in detail. The biology of monocultures including oil palms, rubber and rice will also be studied. The students will gain an understanding of the importance of climate, nutrient cycling, disturbance, and succession on the ecology of tropical plants and animals. Conservation and management issues will also be examined. Assessment: Examination: 50% + Essay: 10% + Practical reports: 40% |
