Photons for communication

6 points + An average of 2 hours lectures, one 1-hour tutorial/ workshop and 2.5 hours of laboratory work per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: PHS2011, PHS2022, MTH2010, MTH2032

Synopsis: This subject provides part of a major in experimental phsyics. It consists of two 12-lecture units, a 6-hour Data Analysis unit and laboratory work. The key areas for each unit are: Photonics: lasers and coherent light, modulation devices, optical waveguides, interference and holography; Radiative Electromagnetism: electromagnetic waves in media, transmission lines, waveguides, antennae; Data Analysis 1: data fitting and data transforms; Laboratory work: experiments and simulations on relevant topics.

Assessment: Examinations (2 x 1.5 hours): 48% + Laboratory work: 25% + Assignments: 27%
