PHS3042Physical phenomena of the solid state(SCI)
Dr Trevor Hicks 6 points + An average of 2 hours lectures, 0.8 hour tutorial/workshop and 2.5 hours of laboratory work per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: PHS2011, PHS2022, MTH2010, MTH2032 Synopsis: This subject provides part of a major in experimental physics. It consists of two 12-lecture units, a 6-hour unit, and laboratory work. The key areas for each unit are: Condensed Matter Physics: crystal structure and the reciprocal lattice, phonons, electrons in a lattice, conductors, semiconductors and insulators, superconductivity; Scattering and Spectroscopy: diffraction from crystals, scattering of neutrons, x-rays and electrons, optical and microwave spectroscopies; Professional Studies 2: impact of physics on technology and society, invention and innovation, professional development, transition to the workplace; Experimental and/or computational laboratory work on relevant topics. Assessment: Examinations (2 x 1.5 hours): 48% + Laboratory work: 25% + Assignments: 27% |
