The aesthetics of performance

6 points + 2 hours per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in the Bachelor of Performing Arts + Performing Arts subjects (PER) are available only within the context of the Bachelor of Performing Arts degree, or in special circumstances with permission from Head of Drama and Theatre Studies

Synopsis: This subject works with selected /texts0 to examine the aesthetic issues involved in the creation of a performance. The emphasis in the seminars will be on the way we understand texts and contexts, how we recognise style, and creative parameters of work or performance. We will examine issues such as the rationale for attempting to recreate /authentic0 performance styles for historical works, issues of audience involvement, communication of meanings in the design and presentation of extracts or short pieces from longer works. There is a practical component to this work.

Assessment: Essay (2250 words): 50% + Class project (2250 words): 50%
