This subject is offered in two parts, fixed wing and rotary wing. Specific eligibility criteria apply for ambulance paramedics to undertake the fixed wing component and for MICA paramedics to undertake the rotary wing component of this subject. Details can be obtained from Rural Ambulance Victoria and the Metropolitan Ambulance Service

Synopsis: This subject covers the specific knowledge required in order for ambulance and MICA paramedics to practice in the area of aviation medicine. The concepts of aerodynamics, aviation medicine and flight physiology will be introduced and form the basis for considering the clinical practice guidelines developed for the in flight management of patients. Students will also be introduced to specific equipment and legal and safety requirements. The theoretical concepts are supported by clinical experience in fixed wing or rotary wing aircraft. The rotary wing component also covers winch and safety procedures including helicopter underwater escape training.

Assessment: Examination: 60% + Assignment: 40% + Cycle reports: Pass/Fail + Practical assessment winch and safety: Pass/Fail + Objective structured clinical examination: Pass/Fail
