MTH3011Partial differential equations(SCI)
Dr Tom Hall 6 points + Three 1-hour lectures, one 1-hour computer laboratory and one 1-hour support class per week + Clayton + First semester + Prerequisites: MTH2010 and MTH2032 or equivalent + Prohibitions: MAT3022 or MAT3041 or ASP3111 or ATM3141 Synopsis: Classification of second-order linear PDEs; appropriate boundary and/or initial conditions and well-posed problems; parabolic equations: the diffusion equation, the maximum principle, explicit and implicit finite-difference techniques, numerical instability; hyperbolic equations: the wave equation, the energy inequality; the advection equation, the method of characteristics, numerical techniques, the CFL condition, elliptic equations: Laplace's equation, Poisson's formula, iterative numerical techniques. Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 60% + Assignments and tests: 35% + Laboratory work: 5% |
