MSC1012Materials in our environment(SCI)
6 points + Second semester + Clayton + Three 1-hour lecture/tutorial classes and one 3-hour laboratory session per week + Prerequisite: None + Prohibition: ENG1501 + Offered subject to minimum enrolment Synopsis: This subject consists of three components broadly summarised as follows: (i) Structure of materials: atoms and molecules; structural assembly; grains, interfaces and surfaces; length scales in materials (micro, macro and mesostructure); noncrystalline, semicrystalline and nanocrystalline materials. (ii) Fabrication of materials: casting; shaping and forming; powder processing; joining; coating. (iii) Materials in service: liquid-solid interactions, atmospheric attack; materials in the body environment; friction and wear; radiation damage. (iv) Structured laboratory exercises to illustrate aspects of the above and to provide some personal, "hands-on" experiences in these areas. Assessment: Six written assignments throughout the teaching semester: 15% + Practical laboratory work: 12% + written reporting of laboratory work: 12% and its oral reporting: 6% + 1 x 3-hour written examination : 55% |
