Asia-Pacific: Regional evolution and Great Power conflict

Synopsis: The subject covers great power interaction in the Asia-Pacific area with particular emphasis on the changing relationship of the United States with Asia-Pacific powers, notably China, but also including Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Topics include: the foreign policy settings and processes in Beijing and Washington; Korea foreign policy in the 1980s; Japan's role vis a vis the United States-China relationship; ASEAN, APEC and other regional organisations: between Eagle and Dragon; impact of the Soviet Union's collapse on the US-China relationship: one China? Late 1990s inter-regnum.

Assessment: Two research papers (3000 words each): 50%
