MED2042Gastrointestinal medicine and the abdomen and principles of human nutrition(MED)
Dr P Tutton (Anatomy). Professor M L Wahlqvist and Dr A Kouris-Blazos (International Health and Development Unit) The nutrition course will be delivered flexibly via CD and the internet. Synopsis: Gastrointestinal medicine introduces the embryology and anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract; secretory functions, motility, digestion, absorption; liver function and disease; lipoprotein metabolism, cholesterol; pharmacological management of vomiting, peptic ulceration, diarrhoea. Human nutrition covers biochemistry of nutrients, phytochemicals, food law and safety; evolution of human diet, eating disorders, obesity and physical activity, diets for weight loss, sports nutrition, vegetarian diets, pregnancy, lactation, fetal nutrition, aging, cancer, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases; food intake and assessment, nutrition counselling on healthy eating and prevention of disease. Assessment: Gastrointestinal medicine and the abdomen: Examination (short-answer and multiple-choice): 71% + Viva voce: 29% + Principles of human nutrition: Examination: 60% + Assignment: 20% + Course modules (assessed with on-line quizzes): 20% |
