MED2021Introduction to pharmacology and neurosciences and introduction to statistics and epidemiology(MED)
Dr A A Beveridge (Pharmacology), Professor U Proske (Physiology), Ms K Smith (Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine), Associate Professor F Cicuttini (Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine) Synopsis: A good basic knowledge of neurosciences and pharmacology is essential for students to understand all aspects of integrative body functions. Studies include the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems; sensory receptors and stimulus transduction; muscle receptors and spinal reflexes; proprioception; motoneurones and central synaptic transmission, the effects of drugs modulating peripheral and central neurotransmission and the principles of pharmacology. Introduction to statistics and epidemiology covers descriptive and analytical epidemiology, study designs, diagnostic and screening tests and interpretation of medical literature. Assessment: Introduction to pharmacology and neurosciences: Examination (2 hours): 90% (MCQ, short essay questions) + Practicals: 10% + Introduction to statistics and epidemiology: Examination (1 hour): 60% + Assignment: 30% + Tutorials: 10% |
