MED2011Cardiovascular and respiratory medicine(MED)
Professor C L Gibbs (Physiology), Dr S Hooper (Physiology) and Dr C Hunter (Anatomy) Synopsis: The anatomy, physiology and pharmacology of the cardiovascular system covers topics including: haemodynamics of the circulation, regulation of cardiac output, arterial blood pressure, the ECG, venous return and the rationale for the treatment of angina pectoris, congestive heart failure and hypertension. The physiology, anatomy, embryology and histology of the respiratory system follows, dealing with topics which include gas laws, exchange, transport and flow, lung volumes and mechanics; airflow and work of breathing; ventilation-perfusion relationships; regulation of ventilation; acid-base balance, and an introduction to clinical respiratory medicine and the relevant basic pharmacology. Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 80% + Viva voce in anatomy: 20% |
