Operative surgery I

6 points + Second semester + Clayton campus

Synopsis: This subject deals with an introductory study of the instruments, techniques and skills essential to operative surgery in either joint replacement surgery, opthalmology, urology and prostate cancer, cardiac surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, transplant surgery or vascular surgery. Anaesthesia, surgical access, specific instrumentation and safe surgical technique will be demonstrated, with emphasis being given to the management of bleeding states and replacement therapy after massive haemorrhage. Aseptic technique and proper theatre management to minimise infections also will be taught.

Assessment: One oral examination: (70%) + One written report: (30%). The exam will be semi-structured and involve six 5-minute topic discussions. Continuous assessment by the student mentor and the supervising clinical consultant in terms of attitude, clinical skills, technical skills and communication skills will be assessed as either a Pass or Fail.
