MCE1212Preimplantation genetic diagnosis(MED)
Dr D Cram 6 points + 6 weeks (first 5 weeks - two 1-hour lectures, 1-hour tutorial, 1.5-hour seminar, 1.5-hour journal review), 2-hour revision tutorial in week 6 + Site visit to Cytogenetics Laboratory + IRD + MMC + Second semester Synopsis: Provides information about the molecular biology and genetic techniques essential in a clinical human IVF program. Students will be taught the theoretical basis of current techniques in genetic diagnosis, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH), and the applications of embryonic stem cell lines. On completion, students will possess a sound theoretical knowledge and understanding of the molecular and genetic techniques used in a clinical human genetics laboratory, and also become familiar with the different applications of these techniques. Assessment: Written examination (1.5 hours):50% + Presentation of journal review:20% + Essay (2,500 words):30% |
