Communicating with Tourists

6 points + 2 hours per week + First semester + Berwick + Prerequisites: A first-year tourism sequence (for students commencing the Bachelor of Tourism in 2001)

Synopsis: In this subject students will explore a range of roles, functions and practices for linguistic communication in the tourism industry and in interaction with tourists. The contexts of the interaction to be surveyed include spoken, written and virtual. The case studies chosen for analysis include Australia, Singapore, France, Finland and Japan. The case studies will provide opportunities to examine tourism in light of broader cultural, political and social issues such as stereotyping and discriminatory language, cultural expectation and attitudes, cultural awareness training, language reform and policies, metaphor and representation of escape and experiential tourism.

Assessment: Journal (1400 words): 30% + Research report (1800 words): 40% + Tutorial activities and participation :10% + Examination (1 hour): 20%
