6 credit points + Two hours of lectures per week + Prerequisite: LAW3100

Synopsis: Examination of the structure, function and powers of local government in Victoria. A detailed examination of the Local Government Act 1989 and other related legislation. After completion of this subject students should be able to understand (1) the framework for local government in the context of recent legislative developments (namely the introduction of the Local Government Act 1989); (2) the framework of Local Government Act 1989 in the context of other legislation affecting the powers and functions of local government; (3) the structure of local government; and (4) the powers councils have to attain their objectives, purposes, functions.

Assessment: Research paper (3750 words): 50% + Take home examination (3750 words): 50%
