Administration of Criminal Justice

Synopsis: Focus on institutions and processes re implementation/enforcement of criminal law. Criminal justice "system"; objectives and models of criminal justice; crime statistics; public perceptions of crime. Other topics drawn from: police powers and exercise of discretion; exercise of prosecutorial discretion; theories of punishment; juvenile justice; imprisonment and prisoners' rights; sentencing; role of victims in the criminal justice system.

Assessment: Major research assignment (3750 words): 50%; minor research assignment or book review (1500 words) or class presentation (if numbers permit): 20%; take home examination (max 2250 words): 30%
