Occupational health and safety

6 credit points + One 2-hour seminar per week + Clayton

Synopsis: The subject involves a study of Victorian and Federal laws on occupational health and safety, in particular the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1985 (Vic). Topics examined include methods of regulation of workplace safety (self-regulation; criminal prosecution; common law negligence); industrial relations regulation of and approaches to workplace safety; smoking in the workplace; repetitive strain injuries; the powers of safety representatives; the right to stop work; responsibilities of employers and employees in occupational health and safety.

Assessment: Research assignment (3750 words): 50% + Class participation: 10% + Supervised exam (1 1/2 hours) or take-home examination (no more than 3000 words): 40%
