6 points + 5 hours per week + First semester + Clayton, flexible mode, distance + Prerequisites: VCE Italian or equivalent

Synopsis: The subject will consist of two sections: (i) Language (70%) and (ii) Modern Italian in Context (30%).(i) Language: practical language acquisition through the use of authentic contemporary written, aural and audiovisual materials representing selected situations and registers; consolidation and extension of grammatical knowledge through revision of syntactical areas relevant to the materials used in order to encourage independent self-expression in Italian (ii) Modern Italian in context: this component of the subject aims at providing an introduction to contemporary Italian studies through an overview of recent history and the analysis of representative audio, video and written texts.

Assessment: Completion of language exercises: 5% + Participation in weekly discussion groups: 10% + Fortnightly exercise to be submitted at the end of each language unit: 15% + Minor assignment (1000 words) on one of the literary texts studied: 10% + Essay (1500 words): 20% + End of semester examination (2.5 hours): 40%
