Managing Intercultural Communication

(ART)

Keith Allen

6 points + 2 lectures, 1 tutorial per week + First semester + Berwick, Malaysia, Peninsula

Synopsis: As nations seek to develop stronger regional and global ties, growing importance is being placed on intercultural communication and awareness of cultural difference. This subject utilizes insights from anthropology, cultural studies, ethnography, linguistics, psychology, and workplace relations to present communication as joint activity dependent on a notion of common ground and constrained by concerns about face and politeness. It examines cultural variation in turn-taking rules, speech acts, formulaic patterns, and the organization of representational discourses. The focus is on management of successful intercultural encounters by applying theoretical insights to practical situations.

Assessment: Two take home tests (1,500 words each): 60% + Individual or group research project (1,250 words): 25% + Exam (1 hour, 750 words): 15%
