Synopsis: Topics covered will include chemical and crystal structure of metals and polymers. Common metal alloys. Polymer properties including creep. Fibre reinforced composites and adhesives. Factors influencing failure and methods of strengthening materials. Material selection.

Assessment: Examination (2 hours): 70% + Assignments, practicals and test: 10% each
