HSY2950Europe: enlightenment and revolution(ART)
David Garrioch 6 points + 2 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: a first-year sequence in History or permission + Prohibitions: HSY3950, EUR2950, EUR3950 Synopsis: This subject will begin with an overview of the period (c. 1700-1820), examining the political and social structures of Europe, the ideologies of monarchy and Church and the challenges to them, and the culture of the eighteenth-century Republic of Letters. It will then use case studies to explore the intellectual and social conflicts of the period and the way European society, culture, and politics were changing during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Students will choose their group presentations from a range of themes, such as religion, science, medicine, literature, technology, education, social reform, disease and society, class formation, urbanisation, industrialisation. Assessment: Bibliography exercise (300 words): 5% + Class test (50 minutes): 30% + Group presentation (approx. 10 minutes per student): 25% + Essay (2400 words): 40% |
