Structure and Analysis in Sociology

6 points + 2.5 hours per week + First semester + Gippsland and distance + Prerequisites: Two second-level sociology subjects (GSC1601 and GSC1602 highly recommended)

Synopsis: The subject addresses the following issues: (a) a developmental and comparative analysis of sociological theory, from its origins in eighteenth-century philosophy, through the classical works of the 'founding fathers', to contemporary social theory - with a focus on structural perspectives; (b) the issue of fragmentation and synthesis within social theory; (c) the relationship between sociological theories and research strategies. Students will also gain practical experience in putting together a research report and presenting and analysing quantitative data.

Assessment: Assignment (1100 words): 25% + Research report (1600 words): 35% + Assignment (1800 words): 40%
