Austrian literature and society 1945 to the present

6 points + 2 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites : GRN2325 or above, or equivalent (to be determined after consultation with subject co-ordinator)

Synopsis: This subject introduces Austrian literature and culture from 1945 to the present. It focuses on cultural developments and the relationships between literary texts and their wider political, socio-economic and cultural contexts. By referring to the differences of the historical and cultural development of Austria, Switzerland and the both German nation states, students will become aware of the specificity of literary traditions, text genres and topics pertinent to the Austrian society.

Assessment: Research essay (1800 - 2000 words): 40% + Class paper: 10% + Homework exercises: 20% + Final test (1 hour): 30%
