GES2660Power and Poverty: geographies of the third world(ART)
Dr Stephen Legg and Dr Priya Rangan 6 points + 3 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in geography, or permission from Head of School Synopsis: This subject focuses on the interrelated nature of development in the third world. The subject will be presented in four parts. In the first, students will be introduced to the problematical nature of definitions and the discourse of development. The second part will focus on a range of problems concerning the social, economic, cultural and environmental dimensions of the interrelated links between population, resources and health issues. The third part is concerned with agricultural communities whereby notions of tradition and modernity are examined. The final part is concerned with the role of government and non-governmental agencies in bringing about alternative development. Assessment: Written (2000 words): 45% + Tutorial/practical assignments (500 words): 20% + Examination (2 hours): 35% |
