Biotechnology and plant genetics

6 points + 12 weeks + 12 hours per week including lecture material, audio tapes, journal tapes, on-line conferences and email, multiple choice questions, short-answer questions and essays + off campus distributed learning + Year 2, First semester

Synopsis: This unit provides a comprehensive account of the basic biology of plants and plant development. It will cover genome sequencing and genetic transfer procedures, the improvement of agricultural productivity by using disease and virus resistant plants and stress tolerant plants. Modification of plant nutritional components from a human health perspective and plants as a source of biologically active chemicals and therapeutic proteins will be covered along with new insight into plant forestry, development of sustainable agriculture and phytoremediation of impoverished habitats. Intellectual property arrangements relating to genetically modified plants and plant products will be presented.

Assessment: Written assignments:40% + Preparation and submission of a Journal:30% + Written theory exam:30%
