GBL4004Biotechnology and conservation(MED)
Dr M Wolvekamp 6 points + 12 weeks + 12 hours per week including lecture material, audio tapes, journal tapes, on-line conferences and email, multiple choice questions, short-answer questions and essays + off campus distributed learning + Year 1, Second semester Synopsis: This unit covers the topics of population genetics and breeding efficiency in maintaining sustainable animal populations. The influence of feral competitors and predators in native habitats and the control of these feral populations through immunocontraception will be explored along with artificial breeding techniques and gamete storage for reconstituting animal species at risk. The interaction between maintenance of habitat and biotechnology will be explored for the benefit of sustaining animal biodiversity. The role of zoos and other organisations in maintaining animal breeding populations will be discussed along with the ethics of all of the above procedures. Assessment: Written assignments:40% + Preparation and submission of a Journal:30% + Written theory exam:30% |
